ONE OF THE THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT JESUS IS HIS COMPASSION FOR THOSE IN NEED AND THE MARGINALISED
|
This is why we are passionate about helping people in need in the city of Derby and beyond.
TALK ENGLISH Talk English is a project run by Derby City Council which trains and equips volunteers to run English courses and conversation classes for asylum seekers and those with very limited English language skills. We currently run two English courses, one at the Multicultural Centre, Dairyhouse Rd, on Monday evenings and one at our building, the Wilkins Centre, Becket St on Thursday mornings 10:00-12:00. Call 07870 402230 for more details. INTERNATIONAL MEALS Once a month we host an 'International Meal' at our building, the Wilkins Centre on Becket St on a Tuesday evening from 7.30-9.30. These are fun, social events for learners from the Talk English classes and volunteers to eat together, play card games, practice English and build relationships. Call 07870 402230 for details of the next one. MILESTONE HOUSE WELCOME BAGS We have good links with Milestone House, a homeless hostel in Derby City Centre and try to go in from time to time to have tea and cakes with the residents or do a Christmas party. Some of our groups regularly spend an evening putting together 'Welcome Bags' for new residents arriving at Milestone House who have come straight from the streets and need a towel, toiletries and underwear so they can have a shower and mugs, plates etc. TRAFFIK JAM We have done several live music events to raise awareness of people trafficking and money for some wonderful charities like 'Stop the Traffick' and 'UNSEEN' that work with victims of trafficking. INTERNTIONAL LINKS We have also supported several projects internationally: LOVE THE ONE a charity working with some of the poorest children in India; a school in Uganda, The Dalitso Trust, a development project in Malawi; two Vineyard South East Asia church plants which we have visited; the work of 'FRONTIERS' in the Middle East, Sam's House, a nursery/therapy centre recently set up in Lebanon for children fleeing the Syria Conflict. |
